With Christmas far behind us and the days slowly getting longer it’s time to think ahead and plan things to look forward to – like carefree days away with friends and family. They say the simple things in life are the best and it’s so true; getting together with a group of your favourite people, idling through the days, the cosy nights… just being together and making memories. With the first school holidays of the year just around the corner it’s a good time to start; things tend to be less costly this time of year and with our special offers on large cottages for February half term breaks you get even better value.

Prices From Just £25 Per Night!

Hang on a minute – what was that? Yep, prices for a February half term stay at a large group holiday house at Stonehayes Farm really do start from as little as £25 per night per person. That’s how much it works out at for a week long stay at Pippinsands from Friday 14th February to Friday 21st. A 4 night mid-week stay from Monday 17th to Friday 21st isn’t much more – just £31 each per night. This beautiful house all to yourselves. With snooze space for 14 in 6 bedrooms, including one on the ground floor in an adjoining annexe – perfect for grandparents, if you’ve got a big multi-generational holiday in mind. Go for a stroll in the fields, come back and light the fire in the drawing room, set the table for a wholesome dinner. Outside there’s a big garden with a hot tub and trampoline, a few strides away there’s a shared games room with pool, table tennis and table football.

Or there’s Julesbrook, which sleeps 16 in 7 bedrooms and has its own games room, hot tub and play area. A mid-week stay comes in at just under £29pp per night. Gratis are the fresh air, the peace and quiet, and the achingly beautiful views that roll on and on forever across the Devon countryside. Lots To Do For Families!

We consider ourselves very lucky to live in these parts because there’s so much for families to do. There are award-winning attractions nearby and most of them are opening up for the February half term. There will be shrieks of excitement if you go to Crealy Theme Park, with over 60 rides and 3 live shows a day, at Wildwood Devon there are animals to say hello to, woodland trails, play areas indoors and out, a zip wire, tree-trop drop slide, a maze and an authentic Saxon village. Axe Valley Wildlife Park will be open, you can see all the happy donks at Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary, and Ferne Animal Sanctuary has special visitor events for half term.

Take on the Hidden Garden Challenge at Killerton (NT), explore Rook Wood at Hestercombe House and Gardens on the Secret Fairy Door Trail, Forde Abbey are offering discounted entry fees for their spectacular Snowdrop Weekends throughout February. At Heron Farm there’s a fairy trail, play park and animals to see, Bicton Park has something for all ages – beautiful botanic gardens, a woodland train ride, a countryside museum and play areas indoors and outdoors.

If it’s not too wintry, book up with Devenish Pitt Farm Riding School for riding lessons or a hack in the Devon countryside. Go to Little Orchard Alpacas for a leisurely alpaca stroll, take your pick from the fun-filled activities at Devon Activity Centre.

Go To The Beach!

The weather sometimes surprises us with spring feels as early as February, but in any case, you can wrap up warm and head to the beautiful beaches just half an hour away on the Jurassic Coast. Lyme Regis is great for a stroll around and for making sandcastles on the main beach; wander out along the harbour wall to the Marine Aquarium to get a close up view of all kinds of sea creatures, go and see the displays at Dinosaurland Fossil Museum, sign up for Rock Pooling Walks at the Town Museum.

At Seaton you can walk out to the Hideaway Café tucked between the cliffs at the end of the beach, visit the bird hides on the wetlands and ride the tram through the marshes to Colyton where you can alight for a proper job Devon cream tea. Discover the pretty coastal villages of Beer and Branscombe, play by the shore at Sidmouth or Exmouth.

Celebrate

Explore the Glorious Countryside

This is a glorious little corner of the world and there are miles and miles of beautiful countryside waiting to be explored, starting with the 15 acres right here on the doorstep. Saunter down across the fields to the little River Luv where the kids can have a paddle. Love the big open fields, enormous skies, tucked away nature reserves and woodland trails. Kick up last years leaves beneath the beech trees at Dumpdon Hill, just up above the large group holiday cottages at Stonehayes Farm, discover the Iron Age fort at Hembury Hill, look out for wildlife on the lakes and along the stream at Otterhead Lakes.

Rainy Day Fun

If the weather isn’t on your side, don’t worry. Apart from the fact that there’s plenty to keep you smiling right here at Stonehayes Farm, there are also several rainy day activities round and about. Just down the road in Honiton there are regular workshops at the Thelma Hulbert Gallery or there’s pottery painting at Honiton Pottery. If you’ve got tinies with you, take them to Planet Play to let off steam, if it’s only raining a little bit, put up your hoods and do the Honiton Detective Mystery Trail.

Go up to Dunkeswell Aerodrome, find a seat in the cafe and watch the planes come and go. Dodge the raindrops in Exeter, flitting from the fascinating RAM Museum to the Gothic Cathedral and Clip n Climb down at the quay. Loads of places to eat, stacks of shops, and a magic show at the theatre for the evening.

Good Places To Eat

Another thing we’re blessed with in this area are all the places to go eat food, including family friendly pubs and restaurants within just a few miles. Very popular are The Otter Inn right beside the River Otter, and the Hare & Hounds up on the hill. Just down the road is Otter Valley Ice Cream & Field Kitchen, serving breakfast, lunch and yep, ice cream, made with milk from their own cows who graze contentedly in the fields on site (who said it’s too cold for ice cream in February?)
